Our adventure kicked off with a short hike through Joffre Gorge, a Class 4 gorge boasting stunning vistas and a serene pool crowned by a small, yet pretty waterfall.

Next up was Knox Gorge, a more challenging Class 5 trek that rewarded our efforts with awe-inspiring views at its conclusion.

We then ventured into Weano and Hancock Gorge, where Weano’s usual allure was slightly dampened by the closure of Weano Pool due to an unexpected invasion of millipedes. However, Hancock Gorge more than made up for it with its thrilling swim-through sections, culminating in the tranquil oasis of Kermit’s Pool. Vanessa found a daring, albeit dry, route to the end—a risky move not recommended for the faint-hearted!

Our journey continued to Kalamina Gorge, another delightful hike that involved navigating through water without necessarily getting soaked. The day concluded with a visit to the enchanting Fortescue Falls, adding a perfect finale to our gorge-hopping adventure before returning to camp.

The second day began with an early departure to Hamersley Gorge, located furthest from our base and accessible via challenging corrugated roads. Despite its short trail, Hamersley Gorge dazzled us with its crystalline pools and a small waterfall forming a heart-shaped crevice—a truly magical spot for capturing memorable photos.

After soaking in the beauty of Hamersley, we drove 40 minutes to Mt Bruce, the second-highest peak in WA towering at 1234m. Embarking on the 9-kilometer round trip hike around midday, we set ourselves the goal of halving the estimated 6-hour trek time. With some difficulty, and a lot of running on the return leg, we managed to complete this trek within 3 hours. In between our trips up and down the mountain, we spent time taking photos and cooking some Mie Goreng noodles.

Originally planning to extend our stay at Dale’s campground and leave early the following morning, we opted instead to depart immediately upon our return. The journey to Port Hedland stretched over four and a half hours, with a welcome break at Auski station for showers, a hearty meal, and refueling.

Arriving in Port Hedland, we settled for a night’s rest in the car, preparing for Vanessa’s early start at work the next day.
